At the beginning of LSUE’s fall graduation ceremony, the chancellor asked for a moment of silence in sympathy with Newtown, Connecticut. We who work with students know their potential; to have it shot to death is a tragedy for all.

Despite the honest anguish felt by so many, the media coverage of  recent mass shootings masks a deeper hypocrisy: of course we don’t want children to be killed, but it’s still the right of every American to own a gun and ammunition. Yet what are guns for? To kill. Phooey on target practice, skeet shooting, and collectors’ pride. Let the police and the mental health system do their jobs, and give them the needed funds to do so. Then pray for wisdom.
